Your Daily Dose of Calm: The Power of Personal Time

In the symphony of our demanding lives, striking a chord of solitude isn't a selfish act, but the very tuning that allows us to play our most harmonious and resilient melody.

Taking time for yourself. It sounds so simple, yet it can feel like a Herculean task in our busy lives, doesn't it? Think of your energy like the battery on your phone. You wouldn't expect it to run at full capacity indefinitely without plugging it in, would you? Well, you're no different! Constantly pouring your energy into work, family, and endless to-dos without replenishing it leads to burnout, stress, and a general feeling of being depleted.

"Me time" isn't about escaping your responsibilities, it's about equipping yourself to handle them better. It's the space where you can recharge and rejuvenate, reconnect with yourself, reduce stress, boost focus, and nurture your well being. Find that time doesn’t always means you have to take a a day off work or or travel to an exotic locale. You can weave moment of calm into the fabric of your day. The idea of finding large chunks of uninterrupted time might feel overwhelming. The good news is that even small pockets of "me time" can make a significant difference.

Here are my go ideas:

  • The Power of the Morning: Wake up 15-30 minutes earlier than usual and use that time for gentle stretching, prayer, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee before the day's demands begin.

  • The Lunch Break Oasis: Instead of scrolling through social media or eating at your desk, step away. Find a peaceful spot to enjoy your meal mindfully or take a short walk. Near my place of employment, there is a pond that I enjoy looking at letting my mind wander until those geese get to close.

  • The Commute Sanctuary: Transform your commute into a moment for yourself. Listen to a podcast, an audiobook, or simply enjoy the silence.

  • The Evening Ritual: As soon as I arrive home I run into my bedroom. I try to take 10-15 minutes to myself prepare myself for whatever my home life will throw at me.

  • Schedule it Like an Appointment: Seriously! Block out time in your calendar for "me time" just as you would for a meeting. This makes it a non-negotiable part of your day.

  • Learn to Say "No": Protecting your time sometimes means setting boundaries and saying no to extra commitments that will drain your energy.

  • Embrace Imperfection: Your "me time" doesn't have to be elaborate or perfectly executed. Even five minutes of quiet breathing can be beneficial.

I am blessed to have a wife that allows me to get time to myself and I try to provide her the same curtesy, although she seems to despise it unless her body makes her take a break. Taking time for yourself isn't selfish, it's an act of self care that ultimately benefits everyone around you. When you're feeling recharged and centered, you're better equipped to handle life's challenges with grace and resilience. So, give yourself permission to step back, breathe, and nurture your own well-being. You deserve it.
